Call for papers: Historical Perspectives on Cross-Border Corruption

We are excited to announce a call for abstracts for the upcoming conference on “The History of Corruption and Anti-Corruption: Institutional Insights and Policy Instruments”, to be held in Barcelona over two days on October 07-08, 2024. This interdisciplinary conference is part of the Horizon Europe BridgeGap Project and seeks to explore the complex relationship between corruption, anti-corruption efforts, and their evolution within various institutional frameworks and policy environments from a historical perspective.

Conference Themes

We invite scholars from history, political science, geography, law, economics, and related fields to submit abstracts of original papers relying on new data and addressing the following themes:

• Theoretical frameworks and methods of historical analysis: Contributions that apply theoretical frameworks to historical data, highlighting innovative definitions, evidence, and measurements of corruption and offering new insights into corrupt mechanisms and the effectiveness of anti-corruption strategies.

• Institutional designs and corruption: Analyses of how different institutional setups have influenced the emergence and management of corruption, and shaped the concepts and evidence we have used to analyse it. What role have specific institutional designs and policy instruments played in facilitating or combatting corruption?

• Cross-border corruption: Historical insights into corruption that transcends national borders and the challenges of studying and addressing those problems. How have international institutions and processes, previous waves of globalization, and North-South encounters shaped representations and institutions of public integrity?

• Various forms of legal corruption, and gray areas of privilege: How can they be identified and analysed, particularly as they have contributed to the steady rise of international anticorruption agendas?

• Post-communist, post-colonial, and post-conflict countries: We are deeply interested in efforts to establish corruption control in societies that are reconstituting their social and governance systems. In what ways might their complex legacies foster corruption or necessitate reforms efforts that address both present challenges and their historical roots?

For all of the above themes, case and country studies on corruption and anti-corruption, highlighting lessons learned and the impact on policy and institutional design, are invited.
